ANTI-MICROBIAL EPITHELIAL CELL OF THE SMALL INTESTINE
Paneth Cells; Paneth cells; Paneth's Cell; Paneth's cell
  • The gastrointestinal tract is composed of numerous cell types that are important for immune activation and barrier surface defenses. The gastrointestinal epithelium is composed of enterocytes, goblet cells, Paneth cells, enteroendocrine cells, tuft cells, and stem cells. In contrast, the lamina propria is composed of immune cells such as dendric cells, T cells, and macrophages.

Definition

Selenium Cell
A selenium resistance box. Vitreous selenium is made by keeping ordinary selenium for some hours at a temperature of about 220º C. (428º F.) after fusing. It is placed in an electric circuit as part of the conductor. Its resistance can then be determined. It decreases in sunlight to about one-half its resistance in the dark. The selenium cell is used in the Photophone, q. v. Otherwise it is little more than a subject of experiment.

Wikipedia

Paneth cell

Paneth cells are cells in the small intestine epithelium, alongside goblet cells, enterocytes, and enteroendocrine cells. Some can also be found in the cecum and appendix. They are below the intestinal stem cells in the intestinal glands (also called crypts of Lieberkühn) and the large eosinophilic refractile granules that occupy most of their cytoplasm.

These granules consist of several anti-microbial compounds and other compounds that are known to be important in immunity and host-defense. When exposed to bacteria or bacterial antigens, Paneth cells secrete some of these compounds into the lumen of the intestinal gland, thereby contributing to maintenance of the gastrointestinal barrier by controlling the enteric bacteria. Therefore, Paneth cells play a role in the innate immune system.

Paneth cells are named after 19th-century pathologist Joseph Paneth.
